SAVE OUR AIRPORT CAMPAIGN
OVER 1000 LETTERS SIGNED & SUBMITTED

Since the British Government put St Helena's airport project on "Pause", the island is now undergoing yet another consulation process to determine Saints preferences with regard to future access.

Many people on the island are disillusioned at the prospect of yet another round of consultations, and it is widely believed the British Government are actually aware of this and therefore expecting a poor response to justify not continuing with the project.

Three Options have been put forward for Islanders to consider and choose during the consulation. At Capricorn Studios we feel strongly that "Option A" which calls for an airport to be built immediately, is the only option for St Helena if we are to kick start our economy and eventually eliminate our dependence on British aid grants.

Along with our friends Clive & Dorothy Warren we have decided to take it upon ourselves to generate support on the island and abroad for "Option A". We have written a letter to the Governor of St Helena and invited members of the public to sign individual copies, over a 1000 of which have already now been submitted. The letter reads as follows:

To: HE The Governor
The Governor's Office
The Castle
Jamestown
St Helena

Dear Sir

SAVE OUR AIRPORT!

I call upon the British Government to adopt Option ‘A' so as to meet the commitment, announced by its ministers in 2005, to build an airport in St Helena as soon as possible. As accepted by the British Government, following the vote in 2002 by St Helenians on access options, an airport offers the best chance of increased prosperity and self-sufficiency for the island and its community. Without it, economic and social decline will continue and the prospects for present and future generations of St Helenians will not improve.

Yours faithfully

We have been pleasantly surprised by the level of support we have received and after just a few weeks of campaigning we have obtained over 1000 signed letters in support of Option A.

A formal handover to Governor Gurr of over 1000 letters has already taken place, however, we will continue the campaign right up to the end of the consulation process by making letters available to sign in Jasper's Cards & Gift shop and delivering the signed copies to the Castle on St Helena.

Whether you live on St Helena or abroad, are a St Helenian or just a friend of St Helena, we would like to ask for your support to our campaign by submitting a signed letter. We have made copies available here to download. Feel free to duplicate and get your friends to sign copies as well, and make sure they are submitted. There are two versions below, one for submitting on St Helena the other for submitting to the British Government. Please choose one.

Let's not give them an easy reason to say NO!

Thank you
